Our “Tangi lifestyle” includes lots and lots of outdoor activities, which, in turn, often cause skin cancer. Most “garden variety” skin cancers are easily removed during an office visit to the dermatologist, but some are special challenges. For troublesome and potentially disfiguring growths, Mohs micrographic surgery has now become the gold standard of treatment, and it is now, for the first time, available in Tangipahoa Parish.
The Mohs surgeon, using local anesthesia in our office, removes the cancerous growth, immediately processes the tissue, and then checks the microscopic margins within minutes. If a tiny root is found after the initial removal, another targeted portion is carefully removed and re-checked for completeness. When the procedure is done, the patient leaves with the assurance that the entire growth is gone without having to wait a week or two for results, and the cancer is excised with a minimum of surrounding skin having been removed because the surgeon maps the cancer as he or she removes it.* Mohs surgery in Tangipahoa Parish is the newest addition to help protect our wonderful quality of life!
