Acne Treatments

The treatment of acne, as with so many other medical disorders, has circled back on itself over the last few decades. Years ago, acne treatment depended upon “physical modalities,” such as scrubbing with harsh soaps, ultraviolet light, low-dose X-ray sessions, and dietary changes. Prescription medicines, both topical and internal, revolutionized acne therapy with great success, culminating with Accutane in the '80s, which is still by far the most effective medical agent for moderate to severe or stubborn acne.

This powerful medication, known generically as isotretinoin, works by shrinking the oil glands and reducing inflammation, often producing long-lasting remission in patients who had previously struggled with persistent breakouts. However, it is accompanied by significant potential side effects, including dry skin, sun sensitivity, and, in rare cases, more severe concerns like depression, leading many patients to seek alternative solutions.

Advances in Acne Treatment

In recent years, there's been a resurgence in non-prescription-based treatments, as many patients are looking for more holistic and less invasive ways to manage their skin. The rise in physical treatments—including Laser GenesismicrodermabrasionDiamond Glow, and even dietary supplements—offers alternatives in managing this unsightly, disfiguring condition.

Laser Genesis, for example, is favored for its ability to gently heat the upper layers of the skin, stimulating collagen production and reducing redness, while microdermabrasion and Diamond Glow serve as exfoliating techniques that refresh the skin's surface and clear blocked pores. Additionally, many are turning to nutritional interventions, such as reducing dairy or sugar intake, to complement traditional therapies. This return to physical modalities is reflective of a broader trend in dermatology: a desire for personalized, multifaceted treatment plans that consider the whole patient rather than relying solely on medication.

There are a variety of treatment methods available for acne.

Microdermabrasion and dermalinfusion such as Diamond Glow abrade the outer layers of skin to unroof clogged pores and stimulate the removal of whiteheads and blackheads. Additionally, Diamond Glow infuses acne-specific serum into the skin. Laser Genesis treatments target the redness and pigmentation which often persist after flares of acne. And of late, dietary phytochemicals derived from certain vegetables have shown promise and efficacy by tweaking estrogen metabolism.

Customized Treatments Lead to Optimal Results

These technological and advanced treatments do not substitute for the tried-and-true methods of acne management, such as topical vitamin A creams, topical and systemic antibiotics, and internal vitamin A derivatives, which have the ability to clear and control the vast majority of cases. Topical retinoids, for example, work by increasing cell turnover and preventing the formation of new acne lesions, while antibiotics target the bacteria responsible for inflammation. Oral treatments, such as isotretinoin, offer a more aggressive approach for those with severe or cystic acne, often achieving long-term remission after a single course of therapy.

However, for patients who suffer from side effects like excessive dryness, redness, or irritation, or who have very sensitive skin, these conventional methods may not be ideal. Additionally, some individuals may prefer to avoid pharmaceutical treatments due to personal beliefs, lifestyle choices, or concerns about the potential risks associated with long-term medication use. For these patients, there are now sensible alternatives that provide effective acne management without the need for prescription drugs. Treatments like microdermabrasion, Laser Genesis, and dietary adjustments offer less invasive options that are tailored to individual skin types and concerns, promoting clearer skin through natural healing processes rather than pharmacological intervention.
